I am often asked if I do web design.

I have built hundreds of websites over the years since I started back in 1996(!), using many different technologies and content management systems.

I have a limited amount of time to spend on website development each quarter, so I now build a limited number of websites for customers.

WordPress as a CMS

I have built websites with all sorts of different technologies from IIS/ASP.NET to LAMP, and CMS’s from custom-built to Expression Engine, Joomla, Drupal, carts such as Magento, Zen Cart, and many more. It’s hard to be an expert in many different CMS’s, particularly when they are changing all the time, so I specialise in my favourite: WordPress as a CMS. Why?

• I’m very familiar with it. I install WordPress several times a week. In fact, I’m building a WordPress training product to help people build their own sites – email me and mention Self Assembly Sites if you’re interested in knowing more.
• It’s a hugely powerful CMS that can be extended a thousand different ways – there’s a plugin available for everything.
• It’s user-friendly and very easy for non-technical people to make changes.
• Lots of people use it. There are currently around 25 million WordPress websites in existence. That means that the developers are going to keep it stable and continuously improve it. It also means that there’s a lot of help documentation, and people out there who can support WordPress based websites – so no vendor lock-in!
• It’s free.
