Blogging isn’t just about publishing posts: it’s also about interacting with the greater internet community. One of the most vital channels for this is your comments section! Here’s why!
- Comments are valuable feedback . Yes, even the critical comments can be. You can even actively solicit user feedback on your products, services and business ideas..
- Comments are valuable content. In the SEO
world, the saying goes “Content is King”. Comments are free content on your site, created by your visitors. Thank them for it! - Comments make your site more sticky. What I mean by this is that people love to have their say, add to the conversation. And so they’ll keep coming back to see if anyone has responded to them, making your site more “sticky”.
- Comments show your site is alive and kicking. When visitors see lots of comments they know your site is live and you have an active community. Either that, or you need to change your anti-spam software (but more on that during the week) ;-)
- You’re always in control of your comments! No matter what’s said, you’ve still got full administrative control of what is published on your site. You can censor and edit comments as you see fit (but don’t change the meaning of what someone says or you’ll have a very unhappy person on your hands). You might find it useful to create a comments policy like I have below. I’d really appreciate any comments you guys have on this policy, do you have any recommended changes or improvements?

good reasons. we have found user interaction to be very useful in boosting our repeat traffic.
The OL style could be updated to give more space between lines. You should also maintain a consistant font size in your typography.

And what happens after October 1?
@Nithiandam, thanks for the comments.
@DW, cheers – I think you’re right – I’ll have a look at editing the stylesheet to make it more consistent. Feedback is much appreciated.
Update: Stylesheet modified to make <li> the same as <p> text. Let me know what you think – there’s some padding in there too.
I don’t know Michele, the blog will self-destruct? :-)
Maybe I’ll start another month of blog posts… or maybe stick to something more reasonable and take it a week at a time!
Cheers.
I like the feedback and the idea of feedback. Its good to have a safe way for people to communicate with you and express themselves. often they post intelligent and helpful comments that I’ve followed to improve my own website layout or content.
