No. 3 in my blogging tips series: a simple rule of thumb to use when deciding on subdirectory vs. subdomain for your blog:
- if the main site has enough compelling content to stand alone in it’s own right from the blog then go with subdomain (e.g. blog.logon.ie)
- if the blog contains the majority of compelling content on the entire site then stick with subdirectory (e.g www.logon.ie/blog)
In other news, my new office makeover is almost complete, so I may be able to post these tips at a more reasonable hour in the near future – I’ve been pushing it to the limit the last couple of days, note the timestamps :-)

I’d have to disagree with you completely
If you use a sub-directory you do not have the same level of choice and flexibility.
If you use a sub-domain you can choose to put the blog on a completely different platform, server or even country.
The content argument is a bit silly.
If the main website doesn’ t have any content, how is adding a blog going to change matters?
I have to agree with Michele… subdomains do have more advantages than subfolders in my opinion.
Well, it depends on how much content you have on your website. But it would be great if you have lots of content on the blog and also the site, so the best way is to have the blog as a subdomain.
I stand by what I’ve said here, but I acknowledge that I haven’t done a good job in justifying it at all. I’ll revisit this one asap with some more meat for the topic.

If you take a look at our company site, for example, www. is physically on one server while blog. is on another.
We wouldn’t be able to do that if we’d used a sub-directory :)
