So my thinking on using subdomains (blog.xyz.com) instead of subdirs (www.xyz.com/blog) is that subdomains work great on bigger sites - particularly those where you have a lot of content on the non-blog part of the site - it stands alone without the blog. On the other hand, I think subdirectories are better for sites with less content on the main site, where the blog will be a major percentage of the site content as a whole.
