September Goal: 30 Days of Blogging Tips

by Alastair McDermott · 20 comments

Bless me, readers, for I have sinned! I have extolled the virtues of religiously blogging upon you, and yet I have failed to do so myself. My penance shall be a month, that’s right – 30 days, of blogging tips for you!

A month of blogging tips

For the month of September, I shall post at least once per day, with a blogging related post. In line with my own religious beliefs, there shall be a heavy WordPress bias in the more technical posts, mainly in the first week. And I promise to cater to those of other denominations with less WordPress specific and more general blogging advice in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th weeks.

Provisional schedule:

  • Week 1: Installation and setup advice
  • Week 2: Goals, interaction and promotion
  • Week 3: Search engine optimisation
  • Week 4: Misc & wrap up

I hope to make it a very interactive series and thus I would appreciate any comments or feedback you have, before, during and afterward.

LogOn.ie Comments policy

I’ve modified our comments template to include a comments policy. The policy is pretty simple, here it is in entirety:

Our comments policy: We welcome all points of view and will not censor differing opinions. All comments are moderated for first time commenters. Links are follow enabled. Spammy or keyword based usernames will have links removed.

Again feedback is appreciated.

Finally, greetings from IFRC HQ in Geneva where I’m sitting out the back in beautiful weather (and just on the edge of the Guest wifi network).

I’m here for business, meeting with some technical people, and for pleasure – enjoying the beauty of the Alps in summer.

If there’s one thing I love about being my own boss it’s being able to travel and choose the really cool assignments! [/end gloat]

Setting a target like that is great idea :)

Shaun Carter August 25, 2007 at 8:15 am

I’m always on the lookout for blogging tips from successful people. I can’t wait for week three… one thing that I struggle wrapping my head around is SEO. I look forward to your tips over the next month!

Alastair August 25, 2007 at 10:05 am

Thanks Michele, yes, it is a great idea – if one hits the target :) That said. I have the series planned out on paper and the only thing that could stop me is lack of determination to find time to implement. As you know yourself, when you’re running a business it’s very easy to find more important things to do than writing blog posts :)

Shaun, hopefully you’ll find it all useful. Like I said, I hope to keep it pretty interactive so if you want something in particular covered in more depth or explained better then leave a comment or send on a mail. Cheers!

Thanks for the comments guys!

Hi Alastair, we have some similar thought, that’s I also wanna be my own boss and travel whenever I want, freedom. :) I have quit my University study and now going on full time online business. I come across your because of your cool design and have some value tips. I have a suggestion here, I hope you can provide some different tips that most Internet marketer wont reveal for public, at least I will come back again to your site. Just my 2 cent.:)

Alastair August 26, 2007 at 2:59 pm

Hey Louiss,

Travel is a very attractive part of running a business. I’m enjoying a working holiday here in Switzerland at the moment, great weather, lovely people and great satisfaction at getting work done!

Thanks for the comments on the design. We put a serious amount of time and effort into getting the look and feel right, and ensuring browser compatibility, accessibility, web standards compliance etc. It’s great to get comments back on that :)

I intend to give a solid overview of what I believe are the most important points, first off. Regarding what marketers won’t reveal for public consumption, or blogging “secrets” as you’re billing them, well I’m a little sceptical.

I don’t believe that there are many secret high level concepts in SEO/SEM.

What I do believe is that there are certain niche areas where some internet marketers are making a lot of money, but only because these are not well known. Therefore if someone releases the “secret” of one of these niches it immediately gets exploited and becomes less valuable.

My point being that even if there are secrets, the simple act of publicising them immediately negates their value. So it’s pointless to publish them, excepting the motivation of linkbait.

I think the “secret” of internet marketing is to learn from experts, learn from experience, learn from your mistakes – and even better from others mistakes. Apply this education to your own life knowledge and experiences and you should be able to come up with some really cool ideas.

Thanks again for the comments & I look forward to interacting with your comments on future posts.

- Alastair.

Thanks, alastair! Actually I have to agree with you about the publicity of the “secret”. Actually I always do that to attract linkbait and get more links. But, at least, we can give them some hint to get the secret, just not directly. I’m same like you, full time online business, but not IM yet. So my time is always free!

Don’t forget Blogger users. Looking forward to your month long blogging objective.

cheers!

What’s your forfeit if you don’t blog every day?

Alastair August 29, 2007 at 1:08 pm

I’m trying to get fit at the moment. How about a 10 mile run? I’d find that tough to do at my current fitness level.

BeatMyAuction August 30, 2007 at 9:11 pm

I always make ambitious goals like this, but then things come up and I miss a day or so. I found that for something like making a post per day is much easier to do right after a meal. I’d go eat breakfast myself or while watching the news…gives me time to think. By the time I’m done eating, I’ve got an idea to write about :)

DayJobNuker August 31, 2007 at 3:15 am

Good luck with the once a day goal. It is hard I tell you. I tried but just can’t make it yet.

Can’t wait for your month long blogging tips may be it would help me. It starts tomorrow right from the 1st :)

Cheers.

I look forward to checking out your series; I’ll be starting a wordpress blog soon, so ‘denominational’ differences wont be an issue with me, I’ll appreciate the information.

Alastair,
Thanks for this post, I will definitely be reading it as I start out my own blogging adventure. I too am trying to discipline myself to post consistently.
I love to read and learn from others trying to do the same thing as me. I will be subscribing to your RSS feed as well!

Alastair,

Sorry for multiple comments, but I wanted to ask what plugin you are using to show your comment replies in blue? I would like to use that on my site as well.

Thanks,
Sean

I like your idea of working towards a plan. It brings in a sort of self-discipline.
